Proton And Avtrex Demonstrate Next Generatoin Pvr At International Consumer Electronics Show 2005
HDTV-Enabled with Advanced Conflict Resolution and Multi-Viewer Support

TORRANCE, CA - Proton Communications (www.protoncomm.com.tw) a subsidiary of Proton Electronics, and Avtrex, Inc. (www.avtrex.com), a provider of leading-edge personal video recorder (PVR) software, are jointly demonstrating a new PVR solution at the International Consumer Electronics Show 2005 (ICES) in Las Vegas, Nevada from January 6 to January 9. It is being demonstrated in Proton's booth (#20713) in the South Hall of the Las Vegas Convention Center:

The solution, based on Proton's advanced digital television platform and Avtrex's award-winning personal video recorder (PVR) technology provides PVR functionality for High Definition Television (HDTV)

HDTV television recording and playback with digital audio
Electronic program guide (EPG) for simple recording setup
Automatic recording of all episodes in a series
Instantaneous search for shows based on name, actors, description, or many other criteria
Automatic recording of future programs that match a stored search
Browse and play a library of MP3 music files stored locally or on a network-connected home computer
Display a slide show or individual digital photos

The solution consists of a Proton HT-5060 ATSC receiver and the Avtrex Media Center software. The Proton HT-5060 set top box is also available in models with DVB-T and QAM receivers. The HT-5060 features an ATI Technologies' XILLEON? 225 processor, broadband connection and provides true HDTV video outputs at 720p or 1080i via component video or DVI. Audio output is provided via component stereo audio or S/PDIF digital optical connector with Dolby Digital 5.1 support. "We are very pleased to have Avtrex Media Center software running on our HT5060," said Edwin Pang, Senior Digital TV Product Manager of Proton Communications. "We believe combining ATSC reception capability and high-definition recording features will enable us to offer unique turn-key solution to OEM customers in the US."

"Proton's HT-5060 is the most advanced PVR platform we have worked with," said Steve Francis, CEO of Avtrex. "It offers all the features needed for an HDTV set top box and lets the Avtrex Media Center demonstrate all its power."
The Avtrex Media Center software provides dramatic advances in the home media experience. Two of the most exciting are advanced conflict resolution and multi-user support.

"ATI's XILLEON? processor is the ideal engine for any demanding Digital TV and Personal Video Recording solution," said David Gould, Senior Software Marketing Manager, DTV Group, Consumer Products Division, ATI Technologies Inc. "The Proton HT5060 combined with Avtrex's Media Center software is an exciting new PVR product for the marketplace that takes full advantage of XILLEON's power and flexibility."

PVR users report unusually high customer satisfaction ratings. 83% of users were either "extremely satisfied" or "very satisfied" with their service according to a March 2003 In-Stat/MDR survey. But the more users record shows, the more likely they will experience a conflict when trying to record too many shows at the same time. The Avtrex conflict resolution technology automatically searches weeks of television schedule data to locate any alternative showing of each of the programs involved in the conflict. In a fraction of a second, it finds alternatives, and presents each possibility to the user to enable an informed choice.

Most homes in the United States have multiple televisions and multiple television viewers. The Avtrex software makes it easy for every member of the household to receive an appropriate experience. These capabilities include:

personal channel line-ups with "favorites" to find interesting shows
expanded parental control system, including
TV allowance restricting viewing times and duration
content limits by rating, genre, or channel
optional PIN system for limiting access
storage space allocation - to keep kids from using up all the disk space
any recorded show available at any television: no need to plan ahead
